  • checks can block actions from another branch
  • judicial branch can check the actions of the other 2 branches
  • Supreme court can declare that a law, and a treaty is unconstitutional
  • the balances let each branch play some role in the power and actions
  • the power of the Judicial branch is balanced against the other branches
